Credit cards can both be your best friend as well as your worst enemy — and what they turn out to be, it depends on how you use them. Use them wisely and in emergencies, and they will be your friends for life — use them recklessly for compulsive shopping and they will turn into blood-sucking monsters.

So, if you are in a situation where you find that accumulated credit card debt is snapping at your financial heels, then it is time for credit card debt elimination. Here are a few practical ways how you can pay off credit card debt:

1. Use your credit card for emergencies only: It is impossible to altogether stop using your credit card. But it is definitely possible to use it strictly only for making emergency payments. So, step one is to stop using your credit card for luxury shopping, traveling, entertainment and eating out, and focusing its use on absolute necessities such as gas, groceries, etc.

2. Pay more than the minimum credit card debt: Credit card companies are tricky guys — they tell you they are making life easier for you by paying only a small percentage (2 to 3%) of your outstanding, and then they charge you a whopping interest on the unpaid balance. The result is disastrous — you keep spending more and paying only the minimum due, and your debt keeps accumulating. Therefore, if you want to get rid of credit card debt, you must pay more than the minimum amount due. Gradually, the interest amount will keep coming down and you will be able to repay the outstanding amount in a phased manner.

3. Take a home loan: Sure, the sub-prime market crash may have made taking a home loan an onerous task, but if you have a home and a whole lot of credit card debts, then mortgage your home, take a low-interest loan, and repay off the high-interest credit card debt. Remember, interest paid on home loans is a deductible expense and that is another benefit you derive with these loans. Of course, the primary advantage is that you are using this cash for repaying that monster credit card debt that is hanging around your neck!

4. Borrow from other sources: if you do not have a home to mortgage, then consider borrowing using your life insurance policy or your 401(k) plan. However, remember this: when you are borrowing to repay off expensive credit card debt, then you must not begin splurging once you square it up. Adopt austerity measures and concentrate on paying off the new loan in your life.

5. Shift balances: Analyze your credit cards and you will find that some of them have a lower rate of interest. If you do have such low interest cards, then shift the outstanding balances from your high-interest cards to these.

6. Negotiate with the credit card companies: If nothing else seems to be working, then it’s time to have a sit-down with your credit card company and place the cards on the table. Tell them that you are unable to pay the outstanding balances, and if they want their money back they will have to restructure the credit card debt. Every credit card company will sacrifice something to get their outstanding back, and nine times out of ten they will plan a good repayment deal for you.

That was how to pay off credit card debt faster. We hope the information was useful. And, good luck to you on finishing off your unwanted credit card debt.

Help answer the question about credit card debt

What should I do about credit card debt? Do I have to pay it off before I can save for a house?
I'm 26 years old, I make about 50k a year and I want to start thinking about buying a house. What should I do with this nagging credit card debt? Aside from car payments, the only other debt I have is $5,000 on one of my credit cards. Can I think about saving for a house, or should I pay it off before I even consider it? Thanks.

Having more than one credit card is not a big deal nowadays. Now people have become more interested in using plastic money instead of cash. Many of us use 3-4 credit cards and prefer to pay off their bills with this plastic money. Naturally, due to this reason many people are suffering from credit card debts burden. In this context we can talk about a proper program that will help borrowers to manage their credit card debts.

Credit Card Debt Management- it is mainly a program that enables borrowers to manage their various credit card debts. The program is clustered with different tools like credit card debt consolidation, credit card debt negotiation, credit card debt elimination etc.
Credit card debt consolidation is an important method of credit card debt management program. In this method a separate loan is taken by the borrower that consolidates all his debts into one with lower interest rate. This point needs to be explained. If anyone’s outstanding credit card debt is £20,000 and the APR or the annual percentage rate is 20% then he has to pay £4000 as interest rate. But by opting for credit card debt consolidation program he will be able to lessen his present interest rate. Suppose after consolidating, if the interest rate becomes 10% then he needs to pay 2000 pounds and he can save 2000 pounds. So ultimately, it will reduce the borrower’s credit card debt burden.

Credit card debt negotiation acts as a debt settlement but usually this procedure is followed in case of unsecured loans. In this process by negotiating a borrower can quench his credit card debt burden. Some times borrowers can take help of various debt settlement agencies in order to negotiating with lenders.

In this context, it is necessary to mention about credit card debt management agencies. These agencies mainly prepare debt management plan in order to solve credit card debt dilemma. Generally, borrowers deposit the entire amount of credit card bills to them and they pay different bills from that money. Apart from that, these agencies also provide different services like, if anyone has too many credit card debts, they can talk the lenders for reducing the repayment amount and expanding the loan period. But do remember, finding a good credit card debt management agency is important in order to handle credit card debt burden. Besides, one should try to maintain following programs to stay away from the negative effects of credit card debt burden.

• Since the interest rate is very high on credit cards, thus it is better using cash rather than using cards.

• Make a budget regarding monthly expenditure and try to follow it

• Avoid using too many credit cards.

Credit card debt management is a unique program that enables borrowers to manage their credit card debts properly. In order to reduce the unnecessary debt burden and stay away from all sorts of debt disturbances, credit card debt management program is the ultimate solution that one can opt for.

Mastercards are a perk in life that can help build credit scores and can get us thru times of emergency when money isn’t available to do so. Unfortunately, credit cards are used for common-or-garden purchases in any case if the acquisition is a want or need, and cards are also employed in times of finance trouble further causing debt. Though at the time of using the card it could seem like it is helping economize by saving money, after interests rates and charges that little purchase will result in a massive fiscal strain leading to years of debt.

It is necessary to realize when credit card debt has gone too far. A few factors can help establish when outside help is wanted to eliminate or cut back the amount due to creditors. Necessities being acquired with credit on a consistent basis sends a huge red flag that help is needed. Minimum, or less than minimum payments each month even on a semi-regular basis is a cry for help.

For those drowning in Credit card debt there is an option available called Debt Settlement. Different companies are available that can work with people to lower the amount on their visa cards, lower or eliminate fee payments, or develop plans to clear the visa cards. Debt Settlement will not only eliminate or seriously reduce money strain they may also stop hectoring calls from credit collectors.

Nonetheless, it is advisable going with a trustworthy and credible debt counselor before making any decision, this way you can save time through specialized advise coming from a seasoned debt counsel and cash by getting better ends up in a shorter span of time.
.

The credit card industry is so competitive that, whatever card you have, the chances are that somewhere out there is one that would be cheaper or better for you and you can change as often as you want! Literally billions of dollars are being used up on expenses that are only created because of the existence of the credit card industry.

A study by The UK Post Office found that a quarter of credit card holders said they had started the New Year more dependent on real credit than ever before with 41 per cent saying that they would be relying on their credit cards to pay for groceries and other daily expenses.

There are a lot of good reasons to be scared of credit cards, and not to have too many.

We live in an ‘I-want-it-now’ consumer culture, and we’re willing to pay more than we can afford to fund our lifestyles. Credit cards are called credit cards to avoid saying what they really are: debt! You will do much better in all things connected to credit cards if you always remember this simple mantra: credit cards are debt cards.

If you had bad credit, you couldn’t get a credit card at all. Once you’ve got a credit card, you’ll find that you can do more with it than just pay for things with the card. Whatever you do, though, don’t spend a whole day applying for every credit card you can find, just to see if anyone will take you.

Lot’s of people who are regular credit card users realize that debt consolidation can bring in several benefits. A loan can be taken for the sole purpose of debt consolidation and often it is at lower rate than what you might be paying to the credit card issuers. You can save money by clearing your credit card bills that might have been attracting very high interest rates. Credit cards are there to put you in debt and keep you in debt. Less than half of all the UK’s credit card users pay off their bills every month and millions are now believed to be using plastic money to pay for everyday necessities, including super market, groceries etc.

If you’re a good customer, you’d be surprised how easy it is to get a better rate.

Far more people get buried in debt because they lose their job, or get sick they take out credit cards to pay for basic expenses, and fall into the interest trap. For higher interest rates, it only gets worse: there are cards out there where only making the minimum payments will actually cause you to owe more each month, not less! Companies giving out small loans are far more likely to rely completely on this rating than to bother checking your income, and a worse rating will mean that you are offered a higher interest rate.

Your limit is just that: a limit, not a minimum! Whatever you do, don’t get a card and immediately spend your whole limit. The average family carries a balance of between 5,000 and 8,000 pounds on all their credit cards, depending on which figures you believe.

Most people don’t work this out, and feel that the payments must simply be their fault for spending too much money to begin with. To avoid being in a credit card debt try to transfer as much money as you can from the high-interest cards down the list to the lower-interest ones.

Phoning companies to ask to negotiate your debts isn’t a good idea it’s too easy to get flustered and say the wrong thing. When you have enough money to pay off your debt, there’s absolutely no reason to keep it. Debt is for people who don’t have the money, and need to borrow it. Debt costs money, and savings make money you want as much of your finances as possible to be savings, not debts. If your savings account and credit card are with the same bank, then you’re effectively paying for the privilege of borrowing your own money from them. Why would you do that?

If you’re in a really bad situation, and you just can’t even make your minimum payments this month, don’t worry. As long as there’s only one late payment, it doesn’t matter too much, especially once a year or so has gone by. Pay attention to what kind of fees you’ll be charged for a late payment, or if you take a cash advance, or if you accidentally exceed your limit on the card.

Don’t let stigmas put you off; this is about your health. People with lots of debts don’t want to talk about it, even with their family, for fear of upsetting people or looking like a failure. It is very important, though, that you do talk about your problems, as keeping it all inside yourself will make you much, much more stressed.

Your rating is important when you get car loans and mortgages too. It is also worth considering that the credit reports of anyone you live with may be linked to your report, and could reflect badly on you your wife or husband’s credit rating is tied to yours quite closely.

Good cards can have a grace period of up to two months bad ones might not have one at all. Check that the card you’re looking at has a grace period on purchases.

The most dangerous thing about debt consolidation loans is that the ones with lower payments generally last a very long time you could be paying it off for twenty years, or even longer. If you’ve got a really unmanageable amount of credit card debt, you might be considering a consolidation loan. If you do take a debt consolidation loan, you need to read the small print as if your life depended on it (it does), and then be very, very careful.

In some countries, you might not have a legal leg to stand on your card issuer can do what they like to you. When it comes to Credit Card Issuers, getting it in writing also means that you can hold them to what they say later on.

Most creditors would rather let you pay back a tiny fraction of what you owe than have to try to get money out of a bankrupt. They’ll be able to lend you the money at a much better rate than a credit card would, simply because they know why you’re taking the loan and can set regular monthly payments for you to repay it.

You need to sit down, work out a budget, cut unnecessary expenses and try to free up as much money as you can to pay back debts. When you’re paying back debts, a little strategy can make a difference of hundreds or even thousands of pounds.

If the advice you get is to sign up for another loan from one company in particular, don’t believe it the chances are that the person you’re talking to is just a salesman in disguise. If you are identified as sub-prime, you’ll start getting offers for loans secured on your property they know that if you can’t pay, they’ll get their money anyway.

Credit unions are like banks, only more local.

You probably don’t think about it, but using a credit card basically makes your money worth less than it would be usually. That’s why it feels so hard to pay a credit card back if you borrow a dollar from a credit card at 15% interest, sit on it for five years, and then give it back, guess what?

Essentially, every company has a slightly different way of working out how much interest you should pay each month. You might also note that consumers with more debt have less to spend and when money isn’t flowing, it hurts the economy.

You might think that one card issuer won’t know what you’re doing with a competitor’s card, but you’d be wrong. Don’t worry if you don’t understand all the maths involved here with credit card interest rates; it’s been deliberately designed by mathematicians and marketers to be as confusing as possible, to stop you working out what a bad deal you’re getting. After all, if you haven’t read this, would you really ever turn down a month off paying your bills?

If you’re in a situation where you’re relying on advances, you should start using your card for smaller things where you wouldn’t usually bother, just to avoid taking the advances and paying more interest. Transferring your entire balance to another card will make them sit up, take notice, and start making you much better offers than you ever got before.

In all things in life, remember that no-one gives you anything for nothing least of all credit card companies.

Help answer the question about credit card debt

How will settling credit card debt affect my credit score?
I have several accounts on my credit that are all in good standing. I just have one credit card with $25,000 in debt. I was making payments on it but when my husband was laid off, I couldn't make payments. It's over 90 days due and I want to settle the debt but I am afraid of how it will affect my credit score and what I can do to make sure it is not too negative on my credit. Any advice?

Credit cards are no more a luxury, they are almost a necessity. So, you would imagine a lot of people going for credit cards. In fact, a lot of people posses more than one credit cards. So, the credit card industry is growing by leaps and bounds. However, the credit card industry and credit card holders are posed with a big problem called ‘Credit Card Debt’. In order to understand what ‘credit card debt’ actually means, we need to understand the workflow associated with the use of credit cards as such.

Credit cards, as the name suggests, are cards on which you can get credit i.e. make borrowings (your credit card debt). Your credit card is a representative of the credit account that you hold with the credit card supplier. Whatever payments you make using your credit card are actually your borrowings that contribute towards your credit card debt.

Your total credit card debt is the total amount you owe credit card supplier. You must settle your credit card debt on a monthly basis. So, you receive a monthly statement or your credit card bill which shows your total credit card debt. You must pay off your credit card debt by the payment due date failing which you will incur late fee and interest charges.

However, you have the option of making a partial (minimum) payment too, in which case you don’t incur late fee but just the interest charges on your credit card debt. If you don’t pay off your credit card debt in full, the interest charges too get added to it. So your credit card debt keeps on increasing, more so because the interest rates on credit card debt are generally higher than the interest rates on other kind of loans/borrowings. Further, the interest charges add on to your credit card debt each month to form the new balance or the new credit card debt amount.

If you continue making partial payments (or no payments) the interest charges are calculated afresh on the new credit card debt. So you end up paying interest on the last month’s interest too. Thus your credit card debt accumulates rapidly and soon you find that what was once a relatively small credit card debt has ballooned into a big amount which you find almost impossible to pay. Moreover, if you don’t still control you’re spending habits, your credit card debt rises even faster. This is how the vicious circle of credit card debt works.

Think you’ve got it bad with the fees your credit card charges you? Well try this: $247 up-front, for a $300 credit line… And that’s not the worst of it!

Help answer the question about credit card debt

Who is responsible for credit card debt if somebody dies? Or does the company eat it?
Say somebody has X amount of credit card debt, then they die but still have that debt to the credit card company outstanding, what happens? Does the company have to write it off as bad debt or ? Perhaps the company can hit up that person's estate. But let me pose another question then – what if that person's estate does not have enough money to cover that credit card debt.

Secure your credit card debts using credit card debt relief immediately if you want to put an end to your debts. Expenses are always increasing in great proportion to the income. Your grocery bills and gas prices would not go down and the increasing prices have left many people as debtors. Increasing credit card debts would mean an increase in the amount of loan you have to pay back. Nobody wishes to stay as a debtor. If you don’t secure your debts now, you will be scratched by your creditors at some point in your life. Therefore, it is best to seek credit card debt relief.

Paying your bills as one of credit card debt relief options

If you are able to pay only the minimum amount on all your credit cards, it is a sign that you’re buried with your credit card debts. When the credit card companies start calling you often, then you should be alarmed that you are going to fall into the pits of debt. Credit card debt relief steps should be taken immediately to recover from your dues.

The most sensible credit card debt relief option on this part is to pay back all your credit card bills every month. Chuck Hoskins from the website http://www.No-Debt.Net says that “basically anything short of paying your bill on time, and in full will affect your credit score. But you can minimize the impact of insolvency, avoid bankruptcy and get back in the credit good graces a lot faster by negotiating and paying rather than just avoiding your debt”. You have to cut down your expenses and start using your extra money to pay your creditors. If you are not taking appropriate steps for credit card debt relief, then your credit report will be badly affected.

Negotiate with your credit card company: a credit card debt relief alternative

Under tight financial situations, you may miss credit card bills for several months. This will result in accumulation of huge debts because the credit card companies will charge higher interest rates right then and there. One great solution that credit card debt relief offers is for you to talk with your credit card company and negotiate interest rates. When you have lower interest rates, you have to make lesser payments and you would be able to clear off your debts soon. Negotiating with your credit card company is a good credit card debt relief procedure for you and the company. Your credit card company would surely listen to you because they are also interested in getting their money back.

Debt settlement companies

There are many companies that would help you obtain credit card debt relief. These companies would mediate and talk to your creditors on your behalf. They would try their best to negotiate for the reduction of your loan amount. They would not take the responsibility to pay your bills, though. Their role in credit card debt relief is to help you get rid of your debts in an easy way.

Filing for bankruptcy as a form of credit card debt relief

The last option for credit card debt relief could be the possibility of filing for bankruptcy. If you have filed bankruptcy, you need not pay back your debts because you are declared insolvent. Filing for bankruptcy may not be a tough process, however the effects are painful. This credit card debt relief option would be present in your credit report for 10 years preventing you from acquiring any type of loan.

There are various credit card debt relief options. You may choose from one of these alternatives in order to stay debt free. Only a debt free man can live happily and spend his money in the way he wishes. Your personal freedom in this aspect depends upon your willingness to obtain credit card debt relief.

Help answer the question about credit card debt

Is credit card debt considered an open account or a written contract?
I live in the State of Georgia and am being sued over an old credit card that I defaulted on. It has been more than 4 years but less than 6 years since the date of default, so depending on whether credit card debt is considered an open account or a written contract in the State of Georgia, the Statute of Limitations may or may not apply. The Staute of Limitations is 4 years for open accounts and 6 years for written contracts. Does anyone know for certain which type applies for credit card debt in Georgia? The account is with Citibank MasterCard and was opened in the late 80′s or early 90′s. Thanks.

The benefits from Credit card debt consolidation, ‘Credit card debt consolidation’ seems to be the most talked-about term in the world of credit cards. It’s true that credit cards have been very useful and convenient for us and we, in fact, treat the credit cards as a necessity. However, with every good you have evil too. In the world of credit cards, ‘Credit card debt’ is that evil and ‘Credit card debt consolidation’ is often regarded as a medicine for treating credit card debt.

Anyone who has read any newspaper articles on ‘Credit card debt’ would already know what credit card debt consolidation is. However, just for the benefit of others, credit card debt consolidation, in simple terms, is the process of consolidating debt which you hold on various high APR credit cards onto just one low APR credit card. Thus, the main benefit of credit card debt consolidation is realised in terms of APR reduction (and hence reduction in credit card debt growth rate).

This is touted as the most important benefit (and sometimes the sole benefit) from credit card debt consolidation. However, credit card debt consolidation comes with few more benefits as well. Some of these credit card debt consolidation benefits are widely publicised by the credit card suppliers and some not so much:

1.	Initial APR: As mentioned above, lower APR is the biggest benefit from credit card debt consolidation. Since credit card debt consolidation is used by credit card suppliers as a tool to attract consumers, they generally offer a 0% APR for a initial period of 6-9 months of you joining their credit card debt consolidation programme i.e. first few months after you get the new credit card.

2.	Standard APR: Lower standard APR (i.e. the long term APR) is the other important benefit from credit card debt consolidation. Though not all credit card suppliers offer a lower standard APR with credit card debt consolidation some do design credit card debt consolidation programmes with good standard APR. These credit card debt consolidation programmes offer a trade-off between initial and standard APR rates.

3.	0% on purchases: This is another common benefit from credit card debt consolidation. The 0% interest (or some lower percentage) on purchases is offered as an incentive for credit card debt consolidation. This credit card debt consolidation benefit is again applicable only for a short initial period.

4.	Easy management: This credit card debt consolidation benefit is not as discussed as others. However, one benefit of credit card debt consolidation (from multiple to single credit card) is the fact that you need to track and manage a lesser number of credit cards.

5.	Other benefits: The credit card debt consolidation exercise might bring you some more benefits in terms of rebates, discounts and reward points (especially if you move to a co-branded card as part of credit card debt consolidation).

Help answer the question about credit card debt

How do credit card debt councilors work with credit card issuers?
I've seen on t.v. how credit card debt councilors work with banks when people owe a lot of money on their credit cards. They say they can not only reduce the amount owed but also get your monthly payments down to where they are manageable. How do they do this, are there any consequences such as a reduction of credit score, and is it effective (do they really do this or is it a scam)? Also, how much do they charge? Thanks.
